SPRINGFIELD — A statewide historic preservation organization has named the former Knox Automobile Factory in the Mason Square area as one of the most endangered historic resources in Massachusetts. The designation was announced this week by the Preservation Massachusetts, an organization that advocates for historic preservation statewide. The "most endangered list," compiled annually since 1993, serves to focus statewide attention on endangered historic properties and often serves as a catalyst for extensive preservation opportunities, according to the organization. Hyannis - Preservation Massachusetts, a statewide nonprofit organization that works to save historic sites, buildings and other resources, has named Pleasant Street in Hyannis to its Most Endangered Historic Resources list for 2016. The street, home to a number of historic homes once owned by sea captains, was nominated for the list by Dominic Alessandra, who lives in the historic Captain Allen Crowell Homestead on Pleasant Street and has been making the rounds of town committees and officials in an effort to call attention to the street’s historic significance. The Most Endangered Historic Resources Program is PM's oldest advocacy and education program. This year's Most Endangered list was culled from nominations submitted by preservation-minded groups and individuals throughout the state. Submissions were judged by several criteria, including their historic significance, the extent of the threat and the community's commitment to preserving the resource. Worcester - Preservation Massachusetts, the statewide historic preservation advocacy organization, has included Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Notre Dame des Canadiens churches on its biennial Most Endangered Historic Resources list. “It’s very similar to what Preservation Worcester has done. The Community Spirit Awards were introduced by Preservation Massachusetts in 2010 as a way to recognize those who embody the spirit of community based historic preservation activities in our Commonwealth. Every other Fall, Preservation Massachusetts hosts the Believe in Preservation Fall Event to announce the biennial Massachusetts Most Endangered Historic Resources list.
