2016 Most Endangered Press: Pleasant Street in Hyannis deemed 'endangered' - Barnstable Patr

Hyannis - Preservation Massachusetts, a statewide nonprofit organization that works to save historic sites, buildings and other resources, has named Pleasant Street in Hyannis to its Most Endangered Historic Resources list for 2016.

The street, home to a number of historic homes once owned by sea captains, was nominated for the list by Dominic Alessandra, who lives in the historic Captain Allen Crowell Homestead on Pleasant Street and has been making the rounds of town committees and officials in an effort to call attention to the street’s historic significance.

Sea Captains Row, as it is known, is endangered because many of the old homes are abandoned and are for sale as part of properties once owned by Maurice McEvoy, who used them for parking businesses. McEvoy died in 2014, and in January of this year, his heirs put the properties up for sale.

Town Councilor Paul Hebert, who helped found the Hyannis Historical Society last November, has expressed concern that the properties may be lost to development. He, like Alessandra, would like to see the properties bought by a developer who will preserve the historic buildings.
