Since 2020, Preservation Massachusetts has worked in  partnership with The 1772 Foundation, on this source of grant funding for historic buildings in Massachusetts.  The Historic Preservation Matching Grant Program is a 1:1 matching grant of up to $10,000 for exterior work on historic properties owned or leased by non-profit organizations. $125,000 was made available for the 2023 grant round.

2023 Grant Recipients Announced
 

PM is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2023 matching historic preservation grants for Massachusetts. Sixteen diverse projects from across the Commonwealth were selected to receive funds of up to $10,000 each for exterior projects on their historic properties. $125,000 in grant funding leveraged $414,515 in total project costs. 

 

This program reinforces the needs that our many historic buildings have and the amount of work the organizations responsible for them undertake. About the Massachusetts Matching Historic Preservation Grant

Who Can Apply?  Only 501(c)3 organizations who own or have a long-term lease on the historic property can apply for this grant. Active church congregations or schools are not eligible to apply, as per the foundation's criteria. 

What Does the Grant Fund? Eligible projects are exterior only and must fall in the following categories. exterior painting, finishes and surface restoration, fire detection/lightning protection/security systems, repairs to/restoration of porches, roofs and windows, repairs to foundations and sills, and chimney and masonry repointing.

 

Who Oversees this Grant? This grant is administered and overseen by Preservation Massachusetts (PM). The 1772 Foundation provides the funding and has made up to $125,000 available for the 2023 grant. Please direct questions about this grant to Preservation Massachusetts.
