The Mayor Menino Legacy Award 2017

Each year, the Mayor Menino Legacy Award is given to preservation projects that are transformative, catalytic, embrace the community, create partnerships, and revitalize the best of the past to make something good for the future. Uphams Crossing in Dorchester has a special connection to the Mayor, being his last groundbreaking as Mayor of Boston, and representing his commitment to safe and affordable housing for people. The project utilized a closed parish property for an inspired new use that embraced the community it had served for so long and serves as a model for others to emulate.

The Power of Preservation

On Wednesday, May 10, 2017, Preservation Massachusetts celebrated those projects that show the Power of Preservation and embody its true essence. Preservation is about more than just a building—it is about relationships, making the old new and relevant again, recycling, up-cycling and sustainability, breathing life back into our community centers and neighborhoods, providing services, and activating appreciation and pride in the places we call home. We must show that preservation is a tool that utilizes the past to make a better future.
