Preservation Massachusetts is the statewide non-profit historic preservation organization dedicated to preserving the Commonwealth’s historic and cultural heritage. Preservation Massachusetts, originally called Historic Massachusetts, Inc., was established in 1985 by citizens concerned with preserving our heritage. In 1989, Preservation Massachusetts allied with the Architectural Conservation Trust and the Massachusetts Association of Olmsted Parks to strengthen advocacy for our state’s valuable historic resources: our neighborhoods, buildings and landscapes.

Today, Preservation Massachusetts works in partnership with national, state and local preservation organizations and individuals across the Commonwealth to preserve our heritage.

Preservation Massachusetts:

  • Educates - Through the Preservation 101, 201 and soon 301, a traveling workshop series for local Historic District and Historical Commissions, annual Preserve Mass Barns Conferences for the Barn Preservation Task Force, maintains a useful Consultant's Directory of preservation professionals across the state, publishes a quarterly newsletter and maintains a viable web site.
  • Advocates - Through our Ten Most Endangered Program, we support groups of concerned citizens who have sought to protect neglected or threatened resources in their communities. Our professional full-time staff handles numerous individual advocacy calls daily.
  • Promotes - Through our legislative agenda, we continue to promote preservation initiatives at the State House and have been successful in the passage of the State Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit in 2003 and its recent windfall of a $50 million cap increase in July of 2006. We also lobby for important preservation tools, such as MPPF.
  • Partners - Through the formation of the Massachusetts Preservation Coalition in 2002, it has allowed the preservation community to speak with one strong voice.  We have also forged partnerships with the development, real estate and business community, in an effort to further the impact and future of preservation in Massachusetts.

Preservation Massachusetts is a 501 (c) 3 organization and we are supported entirely by the generosity of our Membership and the success of our annual events.  Your support allows us to continue to grow and make Preservation Massachusetts a viable, strong and impactful organization.
